My name is Magdalena Sánchez. I was born in El Salvador and emigrated to the United States at a young age. I currently live in Lindsay, a city in California’s Central Valley, near Sequoia National Park.
My vocation has always been in the service of education and community support. I have over 30 years of experience as an educator at the high school and university levels, working with young people aged 13 to 24. Throughout my career, I have guided youth, adults, and especially women, providing educational support to first- and second-generation immigrants to help them navigate the complex U.S. education system.
In the ecclesiastical realm, I have been a Sunday school teacher since my youth, teaching children, adolescents, and adults at the Iglesia del Pacto Evangélico. For over 28 years, I have been an active member of the leadership team of this congregation. I have also closely collaborated with the Hispanic Center for Theological Studies (CHET) in Los Angeles since its inception, serving as a teacher, board member, and interim president for nearly three years. My pastoral commitment has also led me to minister in prisons, providing biblical education to incarcerated individuals and helping them find meaning, reconciliation, and leadership in faith contexts both inside and outside the penitentiary system.
Simultaneously, I have designed and facilitated educational programs to raise awareness in both ecclesial and secular communities about domestic violence and sexual abuse. This work, carried out in collaboration with local and international organizations, has been enriched by the use of the Mending the Soul curriculum, developed by Dr. Steven Tracy and Celestia Tracy. Through this resource, we have been able to provide emotional and spiritual healing to vulnerable individuals, and I cannot imagine doing anything other than continuing to serve on this path of restoration.
Regarding my academic background, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Hispanic Literature from Fresno State University, a Master’s in Bilingual Education from Fresno Pacific University, and a Doctorate in Multicultural Education from the University of Southern California. I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Latin American Theology at the Universidad Católica de El Salvador.
